Tours in 2011

We offer riders the opportunity to enjoy the qualities of  the Icelandic horse in his own country where the hard natural environment has shaped the breed through the centuries.gh_graenn

We make a special point of small groups of participants, soft and easy riding horses and good food. To make sure that the participants  enjoy their tour as much as possible  we always tray to keep the day's journeys not too long to make sure horses and the rider’s don’t get to  tired and stay fresh.

Included in the tours is following: Transportation from and to Reykjavik, riding horses,  saddles, safety helmets, rain coats, meals and sleeping accommodation.

Participants must bring with them: sleeping bag, warm clothes, good foot wear, fly nets  and good humor. All riding wear must be thoroughly washed before being brought to Iceland.

Note. The sleeping accommodation in the tours can change due to unforeseen circumstances. We do of course try our best to keep our posted tour descriptions.

Tour no.1.

This is a 4 day tour suitable for less experienced riders as well as experienced ones.

Day 1.

June 20th. Ás horse farm to Skarđ. On the first day we cover about 20 km in the saddle, roughly about a 4 hour ride. We leave the horses at the farm Skarđ and drive the participants to the turist farm Galtalćkur were spend the night.

Day 2.

June 21th. Skarđ to Áfangagil. This day we ride in the area of the famous volcano; Hekla. We take it easy and stop for a while at a waterfall in the river Ţjórsá called “Tröllkonuhlaup” or (Giantess Leap). The waterfall got its name from a myth about giantess that supposed to live in mountains Búrfell and Bjólffell. We ride for about 4 hours and stay in a mountain cabin in Áfangagili.

Day 3.

June 22th. Áfangagil to Galtalćkur. From Áfangagili we ride south through Sölvahraun, a lava field, and cross the river Rangá into Rangárnotnar. Then we ride down by the river Rangá though a very beautiful landscape. We ride by the river almost all the way to Galtalćk were we stay over night. This ride takes about 4-5 hours.

Day 4.

June 23 d. Galtalćkur to Ás. This is about a 5 hour ride. We do town by the river Rangá toward the farm Hrólfstađahellir were we stop. From there we drive to Ás, go for a swim and have a nice dinner afterwards.

 

Tour no. 2.

This is a 6 day tour for experienced riders.

June 24th Participants gather at Ás horse farm and stay there over night.

Day 1.

June 25th. Ás to Galtalćkur. After a good breakfast we drive to the farm; Hrólfstađahellir were the tour starts. The ride takes us up Landssveit along the river Rangá. We stop at the old and famous Landréttir which is a sheep-fold that farmers in the county of Land and Holt used in the 17th century until late in the 20th century. The trek this first day takes about 6 hours and is very scenic and the trails are great. We end at the farm guesthouse Galtalćkur were we stay overnight.

Day 2.

June 26thGaltalćkur to Áfangagil. This trek takes us close to mountain Hekla. It is a nice and easy day we use to take a look at some beautiful places. We end at the mountain cabin at Afangagil.

Day 3.

June 27th. Áfangagil to Ţóristungur. From Áfangagili we ride north towards mountain Valafell as we enter the kingdom of volcano Hekla. The land is black from the lave dust and sand from the volcano. We arrive at Ţóristungur around midday. There we can take a shower and relax to get our energy going again. The ride takes about 5 hours.

Day 4.

June 28th. Ţóristungur to Hólaskógur. The trek takes us from Ţóristungur down by the east bank of the river Tungnaá. We stop and rest at Hald, which is the old ferry crossing over the river. We keep riding south and cross the river Ţjórsá at the power plant Sultártangi and head to Hólaskjól were we stay in a mountain cabin over night. This is about a 6 hour ride and the trek is smooth and easy.

Day 5.

June 29Th. Hólaskógur to Klettur. From Hólaskógi the trail takes us west Ţjórsárdal. We stop and rest at the old Viking farm; Stöng, which was deserted after a volcano eruption in 12 th. century. The ruins have been dogged up and preserved. We take a short detour to take a look at the waterfall; Háifoss, which is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland. We stay in mountain cabin at Kletti over the night. This is around a 4 hour ride and is extremely beautiful.

Day 6.

June 30th.Klettur to Fossnes. We continue west Ţjórsárdal on great trails through beautiful landscape. The tour ends at the holiday farm Fossnes in the county of Gnúpverjahreppi. This is a 4 hour ride.

Tour no. 3.

This is a 7 day tour for experienced riders.

July 3d Participants get together in the evening at Ási, were they stay overnight.

Day 1.

July 4 th Fossnes to Klettur. We drive from Ás to Fossnes where the horses are waiting. From Fossnesi we ride east through the valley Ţjórsárdalur, which is well known for great riding trails and beautiful landscape. The ride is short and takes about 4 hours and ends at Klettur were we stay over in a mountain cabin.

Day 2.

July 5th Klettur to Hólaskógur. The trail takes us by the river Fossá were we take a look at one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland; Háifoss. We stop and rest at the old Viking farm; Stöng, which was deserted after a volcano eruption in the 12th century. The ruins have been dogged up and preserved. This ride takes about 5 hours and we end at Holaskogar mountain cabin

Day 3.

July 6th. Hólaskógur to Gljúfurleit From Hólaskógur we ride north of mountain Sandafell toward the river Ţjórsá to Skúmatungur. We continue from the old posted trail called Biskupaleiđ to Gljúfraleit, were we stay overnight in a mountain cabin. This ride is about 5 hours long.

 Day 4.

July 7 th. Gljúfurleit to Leppistungur. This day we travel in the real wilderness no roads or treks. We across the area called; Gnúpverjaafrétt and Flóamannaafrétt. After about 6 hours ride we end the day in a place called Leppistungur, and spend the night in a mountain cabin used by sheep herders. 

Day 5.

July 8th Leppistungur to Svínárnes. We across a big swampy area called Miklumýrar. We take the lunch break in a place called Fosslćkur and then continue beside the river Grjótá all the way to the mountain cabin in Svínárnes. This ride is about 5 hours long.

Day 6.

July 9 th. Svínárnes to Hallarmúli. We ride south Mikluöldu and continue through Búđarárdrög and down by the great canyons of river Big Laxá. We cross the river by a place called Hrunakrókur and ride to Hallarmúla, were we stay in a mountain cabin used by sheep herders. This ride takes about 7 hours.


Day 7.

July 10 th. Hallarmúli to Fossnes. The last day of the tour and now we ride south the heath called Skáldabúđarheiđi to a farm named Laxárdalur. From there we ride through the beautiful and green area of the county of Gnúpverjahreppur, were farmers will probably by making hay. The tour ends at the farm holiday farm Fossnes. The ride takes about 6 hour and we end the day by going into the hot spa and do a wonderful barbecue in the evening
